I am using TurboTax Deluxe to enter my 2019 tax filing. When I go to enter the childcare deduction for my daughter Gianna, her name does not appear on the list of dependents to choose from, only my wife and myself appear. This is even though Gianna is listed as a dependent.
Furthermore, when I begin the deduction, I get the following message:
"Because you entered $6,000 or less of earned income for both Samuel and Adrienne (wife), we need to know if either of you a full-time student or disable."
This appears even though our income shows over $100K. I'm not sure if this has something to do with this.
Please let me know what I am doing incorrectly to enter Gianna as a dependent for the Child Dependent Care deduction.
Thank you,
Sam
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
Double-check that you did not enter all the W-2s under the same spouse. If this happens, it looks like one of you is not working and may need the care. You would also possibly not be eligible to include your daughter.
I entered all W-2s under the individual they were for. I am still not getting the option to update the Dependent Care page with my daughter. Please see screen shot below.
When I select add a dependent, my daughter is listed, but her name does not appear in the above drop down menu.
Does her childcare not qualify as dependent care?
Thank you,
Sam
Make sure that all the W-2s are not entered under one spouse only.
Coleen,
Again, all W-2s are assigned to the correct individual. See snap shot below:
Let me know if there is something else I need to try.

How old is Gianna? If she is over 13, then her name wouldn't appear. Also go over your information that you recorded for Gianna and go through the questions until the end until you receive the message that Gianna qualifies as your dependent. After you receive this verfication, then go back through your childcare and dependent questions.
Also you Turbo Tax seems to think you only have $6000 or less of EARNED INCOME. Earned income are things like W2 income or self-employment income. If you have other income other than earned income, it doesn't qualify fro a dependent care credit. Both you and your spouse need to have earned income claimed in the return.
@DaveF1006 User showed his income screen shot. There is a bug in the Desktop program. Guess they never put out a containment support article or fixed it. Can you tell someone again? See this post
