Charitable Donations Carryover from 2021. I don't get it. Is it as simple as entering your previous year(s) non-cash and cash donations? I don't recall this being here

If you used TurboTax for your 2021 return and you had more charitable donations than you could deduct due to the AGI limitations, TurboTax should have transferred them to your current return. Once all of your income, deductions, and credits are entered for 2022, Schedule A of your return will show how much of your charitable deductions were allowed for 2022.

Otherwise, follow these directions to manually enter your charitable carryover:

  1. Open (continue) your return in TurboTax
  2. In the search box, type donations and then select Jump to donations in the search results
  3. Answer Yes to Did you make any donations to charity in 2022? (even if the answer is no)
  4. Answer No if you are asked if you have an ItsDeductible account (even if the answer is yes)
  5. Answer No to the question Do you want to enter your donations for 2022?
    • If you see Review All Your Charities instead of this question, select Done with Charitable Donations

See this help article for more information on charitable carryovers.

What do you do if you made the mistake and deleted the carryover donations from 2021? How do you added it back in and find out what can be carried over from previews years

If you had unused charitable carryovers on last year's return, and you transferred that return over, you don't have to do a thing – we've already entered that for you.

  6. The next screen will ask Do you have charitable donation carryovers? Answer Yes and enter the info for your charitable carryovers on the following screens

Tip: Most qualified charitable organizations are 60% limit organizations, which means you'll enter the carryover on the Enter Your Charitable Carryovers screen. 20% and 30% limit organizations are entered on the following screen, Other Carryovers. More information about 60%, 30%, and 20% limit organizations is available at this IRS webpage.

You can carryover your contributions that you are not able to deduct in the current tax year because they exceed your adjusted-gross-income limits. You can deduct the excess in each of the next 5 years until it is all used but not beyond that time.

So I have a carryover from 2021 that was capital gain property.  I entered the info in the interview, and when I go to the Charitable Deduction Limits Worksheet, I see that amount on line 5, and nothing entered on lines 1-4 or 6-7. Which is what I expect.

But then when I look down at Step 2 section D, line 24 says to add lines 6 & 7, which should be 0. But instead, TurboTax has entered my current cash charitable donations for 2022.  Where did that come from?

Assuming you are looking at the worksheets in Forms Mode in TurboTax Desktop/Download:

Right-click in the data field for Line 24 and then click on Data Source. It is actually pulling in two different Lines 6 and 7, from two different Limits Worksheets, to add up to the amount that you see on Line 24.

On lines 6 and 7 of the Charitable Deduction Limits Worksheet for Carryover Contributions, you are correct that it shows zero on Lines 6 and 7 and it shows your carryover amount for capital gain property on line 5.

If you click on all of the links you see in the Data Source for Line 24 (there are probably four links), you will see that there is a second Charitable Deduction Limits Worksheet, for Current Year Contributions. That is where your current year cash donations come in.

Many thanks for your reply! I figured it was pulling from two different worksheets, but I couldn't see in any instructions that it was supposed to be doing that.  Don't know if that is a deficit in Tubo Tax or the IRS forms themselves.

Also FYI, the right-click in the box did not work for me.  Nothing came up.  I am indeed using the downloaded desktop product  though on a Mac.

And am I crazy in thinking one used to be able to jump from the form to the place in the easy step interview where the number is coming from?  I also remember being able to edit the forms directly if you saw an incorrect figure.  (For example, if I had entered $1000 for a charitable donation when it should have been $100.) Though I think it cautioned you and maybe just took you back to the corresponding interview step.
