Something about TurboTax I've been frustrated with for a few years is that in the medical expenses step-by-step view double clicking the value entry fields doesn't bring up a supporting details form, unless a supporting details was already there from previous year import.
Today I found a workaround. Go to Medical Wks in forms view and use a supporting details form to enter values. Then the supporting details form is also available in the step-by-step view by double clicking the value entry field.
It used to work like supporting details everywhere else in TurboTax. But for the past several years it hasn't worked correctly.
Reported this issue couple years ago. Still it exists.

This is still a problem in 2022 Premier.
Isn't it time to fix it?
Not a problem using my 2022 Premier desktop edition for Windows. Just put the cursor in the box for entering the expenses and click on Edit>Add Supporting Details/
Thanks for the tip.
I failed to mention that we were right-clicking on the field, expecting it to bring up the supporting menu, like it does on other non-medical fields.
Yeah, there's certain sections it doesn't work with the rt-click anymore (during the interview).
It appears to be in any section they re-wrote the software for....basically, any section where you enter it...and you get the rotating blue circle for a few-30 seconds before it opens. Probably rewritten subroutines in a different language than the original software...where..perhaps the original Q&A was integrated into the software and not a subroutine. (I'm not really a current software person...but had a bit of programming 30+ years ago....you know...Basic..Fortran...assembly code)
____
.If you want to see the difference with the rt-click Supporting details availability, in the interview...
Go to the Deductions&Credits page...in the quarterly Estimates section.
1)......enter the "State estimated taxes for 2022" menu item, you get in immediately, and you can rt-click in each $$ box to also get immediate access to the pop-up to either open a Supporting Details Worksheet, or create one if one does not exist.
....On The Other Hand...
2)....enter the "Federal estimated taxes for 2022 (Form 1040ES)" menu item??? and you get the blue circle (Please Wait) first, (as the software wanders off to open the subroutine??) ..then rt-click on any of the $$ boxes and you get....nothing...
So they rewrote the Fed Estimated taxes section....but not the State....to what purpose...who knows. Maybe the program got too huge and became unworkable without rewrites for some sections....and resulting slower response in many places.
_______
I have back to 2013 desktop still installed...I just checked and that Federal Estimates section was rewritten for the 2018 software (i.e. could still rt-click to get the SD sheet for Fed estimated taxes up thru the 2017 software).
Same for Med Expenses interview.....rt-click for the SD sheet worked for 2017 taxes, didn't starting for 2018 and beyond.
______
Thanks for the data. We both worked for a very large software business, and we suspected rewrites as being the culprit in this case. But we don't have the historical records that you have.
Our company was always very careful to maintain a baseline UI standard, and that included keeping a uniform look-and-feel from version to version.
TT would do well to do the same. They owe it to their clients.
