Can I get a refund if I have only social security disability income (~$22000), paid no federal taxes and large medical expense deductions (~$11000)?

I am single, 43yo, and on permanent disability.

No. SSDI is not taxable if that is your only (Joint) income, so there is no income against which to deduct anything.

Once you have been on SSDI for 2 yrs, you are eligible for Medicare.  In the meantime, consider filing for Medicaid. Some states also have special health insurance plans for disabled persons.

I already have Medicare. The reason for most of the cost was dentistry (long story), which they do not cover, and prescription/medical visit copays.  Image full understanding about my health choices.  I have filed before with the SSDI but have never had enough medical bills to itemize. This time I do and I have read many things about this but the answers have been on both sides of yes and no for the refund.  I need to know the real answer. Thanks.

"I have filed before with the SSDI": But why?
No taxable income, so no refund.

Are you getting any other kind of disability income, such as from an employer plan?
