Yes, you can deduct the sales taxes, on items you purchased in Texas, if you itemize your deductions.

To see if you should itemize, add up all of your expenses that are eligible to be itemized, including your sales taxes.

  • If the total amount is greater than the standard deduction amount for your filing status, then you can itemize on Schedule A and claim the sales tax deduction.
  • If not, then you can still itemize but are probably better off claiming the standard deduction where you cannot deduct the sales tax.
  • How does the itemized deduction differ from the standard deduction?

To enter your sales tax you paid:

  1. Open (continue) your return if it's not already open.
  2. Inside your program, search for sales tax and then select the "Jump to" link in the search results.
  3. On the Let's Compare screen, select Try Sales Tax or Continue (the button varies depending on your current situation).
  4. When asked how you want to enter your sales tax, choose EasyGuide.
  5. Answer the questions about where you lived, the dates, and your sales tax rate.
    • If you only see the Places You Lived screen, choose Edit to access those questions.
  6. When you get to the Major Purchases screen, answer Yes and follow the onscreen instructions to enter the sales taxes you paid on your vehicle purchase.
