Can i claim mileage to drive to college to complete the police academy if I was hired by a sheriff department prior to attending college. Would it qualify as the short term education since it was only 17 weeks to where you can claim the mileage as a business deduction because going was a certification to to benefit the employer?

No. Commuting to and from work or school is not deductible.
Commuting to a primary place of work or school is not deductible.
Under current law, employee business expenses are not deductible for most employees on the Federal tax return. Some states still allow these expenses as a deduction, typically only to the extent they exceed 2% of Adjusted Gross Income. See this article for more information.
If you were already an employee and had temporary mileage to another location for training, check to see if reimbursement is available from the department.
