Why do I owe NJ taxes if all my income was earned in NY state and we already paid Property tax in NJ for our residency?

If you live in New Jersey, your income will be taxed there even though you work in New York. However, you will see an option for a credit for taxes paid to another state on your New Jersey tax return. You need to make sure you enter the correct tax paid in New York on your New Jersey tax return. Your New York tax is the amout on line 58 of form IT-203. You can also look on your New York tax summary report in TurboTax to find the amount by following these instructions (make sure you are working on your New York return when you do this):

  1. Click on Tax Tools in the left menu bar
  2. Click on Tools
  3. Look under Other Helpful links….
  4. Choose View Tax Summary
