What state tax returns do I need to file and which income do I need to include in the state tax returns?

My parents live in California and claim me as their dependent.  I go to college in Pennsylvania and earned income working at school.  I also earned income from my summer job in Minnesota.  Am I supposed to file a California resident return, Pennsylvania non-resident return, AND Minnesota non-resident return?  Am I supposed to report all of my PA and MN income in all three tax returns?

Given your multiple state earnings, you may need to complete a California resident return since your parents live in California and claim you as a dependent. Here are steps  you can take:

Pennsylvania Non-Resident Return:

  • File a non-resident return for Pennsylvania and report only the income earned in Pennsylvania.
  • You will likely have to pay Pennsylvania taxes on this income but can claim a credit on your California return. For more information, check the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue.

Minnesota Non-Resident Return:

  • File a non-resident return for Minnesota and report only the income earned in Minnesota.
  • You may owe Minnesota taxes but can claim a credit on your California return. For more details, visit the Minnesota Department of Revenue.

California Resident Return:

  • Report all your income, including what you earned in Pennsylvania and Minnesota, on your California return.
  • You may get a credit for taxes paid in Pennsylvania and Minnesota. For more details, visit the California Franchise Tax Board.

When using TurboTax, be sure to start with the non-resident tax returns to ensure the resident return recalculates correctly. For more guidance, you can refer to this TurboTax article on multi-state returns.
