We are a married couple living in different states and filing jointly. We moved from one state to two different states. How to file tax and interest deduction worksheet?

Moved from one state (was living here together at same home) to two different states. So there are total of three different states we lived in. While filing it gives a problem in the tax and interest deduction worksheet: "The dates entered result in more than 365 days. Please review the entries in the form and columns to ensure there are no overlapping periods of residency."

This error typically relates to the "Sales Tax" topic. Revisit the Sales Tax topic and review/edit the dates input for each state.  The dates cannot overlap.

In the Federal interview, go to:

  1. "Deductions & Credits"
  2. "Estimates and other taxes paid"
  3. "Sales taxes"
  4. "Easy Guide"

Having no more than 365 days total in the Sales Tax section should resolve the issue.

Thank you for the answer.

Here is an example of our situation : my wife and I both lived in Texas from 01/01/2022 to 06/22/2022. Then I moved to Indiana and she moved to Massachusetts.  In order to not have more than 365 days in total, I either have to get rid of my residence in Indiana or her residence in Massachusetts. Is this okay?

Thank you for your help!

Yes. It's OK to only use Indiana or Massachusetts. The IRS allows you to claim the larger of sales or state income taxes paid. Most times, state income tax withheld will be the bigger deduction. I suspect that's the case even with just half a year's income tax withheld.

If the state income tax is larger, the sales tax calculation will not show up on your return.

If you bought a motor vehicle or made a large purchase, you could try entering the actual sales tax paid rather than the EasyGuide and enter whatever receipts you have to see if that brings a larger deduction.
