Thank you for the answer.
Here is an example of our situation : my wife and I both lived in Texas from 01/01/2022 to 06/22/2022. Then I moved to Indiana and she moved to Massachusetts. In order to not have more than 365 days in total, I either have to get rid of my residence in Indiana or her residence in Massachusetts. Is this okay?
Thank you for your help!
Yes. It's OK to only use Indiana or Massachusetts. The IRS allows you to claim the larger of sales or state income taxes paid. Most times, state income tax withheld will be the bigger deduction. I suspect that's the case even with just half a year's income tax withheld.
If the state income tax is larger, the sales tax calculation will not show up on your return.
If you bought a motor vehicle or made a large purchase, you could try entering the actual sales tax paid rather than the EasyGuide and enter whatever receipts you have to see if that brings a larger deduction.
