unable to efile state taxes from abroad?

Hello-

I've been traveling in India the past few years and finally made enough income last year to file for 2019. I filed federal taxes online with turbotax no problem but they won't let me efile state taxes. 

I assume I'm a non-resident as I've been out of the country for the whole year, but when I go to select the state of residence and click the "not applicable" blank in the dropdown for alternate state, the alternate country dropdown below it remains closed/inaccessable. Can anyone help? Efiling would be so much simpler. If not, can anyone tell me exactly how to print the return and mail it?

It depends.

Are you getting a specific message telling you why you cannot e-file your state return,  If so, please comment so we can assist you.

Otherwise, you can do the following to print out your state tax return.

1. Sign in to TurboTax. 
2. You should be able to see Your Tax Returns & documents  
3. Select show here. 
4. Select 2019
5. Select Add a state

This will allow you to see your state return.  (You do not need to actually add a state, but this will allow you to access your existing state return.)

You will then be able to try to print your state return to file.

1. Select File.  You will follow the steps until you get to Step 3. 
2. On this screen, be sure to select you want to File by Mail.

This will allow you to print out your state return with filing instructions so you can sign and mail in your returns.
