Total State Showing in box 15. I worked in two states but only show TOTAL STATE in box 15 on page 1 of 2 and one of the states in page 2 of 2

Hello,

I worked half of the year in one state and then got a promotion and moved to our corporate office in another state for the second half. I work for the same company but with the new job, the office employees fall under our parent company and have a separate FED ID number than the employees working in the field. I got one W-2 for my time working in the field that has that state info in boxes 15-17. I assumed my other state information would be on the second W-2 but it says "Total State" in box 15, box 16 is blank, and then box 17 has an amount on page 1 of 2. On page 2 of 2, it has more of the first state info in box 15, an amount in box 16, and an amount in box 17. I don't see any of the second state info listed anywhere. What do I do to make sure I'm filing correctly? Do I need to get a new corrected W-2 from my company? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

It sounds like the W-2 that says "Total State" in Box 15 and Box 16 is blank, could mean that the state you moved to doesn't have State income tax.

Only eight states have no personal income tax:

  • Wyoming
  • Washington
  • Texas
  • Tennessee
  • South Dakota
  • Nevada
  • Florida
  • Alaska

If this is true, you would only need to file a state tax return for the income you received while living in that state that has state income tax.
