If you use any paid version of online TurboTax you pay to prepare a state return. There is nothing new about that. The fee is for using the software to prepare the return; it is not for e-filing.
If you use the CD/download, some versions of Deluxe include state software, some do not---so be careful when you purchase Deluxe from a retailer. If you purchase it without software for a state it costs you an extra $45 to add the state program.
And.....with the CD/download there is ALWAYS---ALWAYS--- a fee to e-file the state return. You can avoid the state e-file fee with the CD/download if you print and mail the state instead.
