State Tax Error on Standard Deduction

I just received a letter from Kansas, my state of residence. They apparently audited our 2021 tax return. The letter references the error. Apparently, and let me stress we have never itemized, we have always gone with TT's recommendation for the standard deduction, Kansas is saying we took a $1.5 MILLION itemized deduction.

Again, we've always selected the standard deduction. We don't have the audit defense bc our taxes are always so simple.

How on earth could this happen??? We didn't manually enter 1.5 million!! We haven't ever made enough money to itemize or even owe any taxes. So now we owe over a thousand in penalties and fees alone. Has this ever happened to anyone?? Can TT even do anything?

State Tax Error on Standard Deduction

Start by calling the state and find out if the letter is legit.  It might be a scam.

And.....get a printed copy of your 2021 federal  return in front of you to look at line 12 on your Form 1040.

Federal standard deduction amounts for 2021:

2021 STANDARD DEDUCTION AMOUNTS

SINGLE $12,550  (65 or older + $1700)

MARRIED FILING SEPARATELY $12,550  (65 or older + $1350)

MARRIED FILING JOINTLY $25,100  (65 or older + $1350 per spouse)

HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD  $18,800  (65 or older +$1700)

Legally Blind + $1350

And print out a copy of your 2021 state return to look it over too.

Thanks for your reply. I will call when they're open tomorrow, but the letter had all of our information correct, including social security numbers. Though with all of our data floating around, it could still be a scam.

I downloaded state and federal on TurboTax and federal has the normal standard deduction with a few hundred in charitable deductions. State has that we gave out 1.5 million to charity via cash or check. It's insane. To do that, I would have had to let TT know I wanted to itemize just the state return, then under "charitable contributions" type in 1500000. I just don't see how I could even lean on the keyboard and have that happen. Plus, shouldn't TT catch that I put it on state and not federal? They're supposed to catch discrepencies like that. I'm just so frustrated and don't know whether to be mad at myself or TT lol.
