Need to amend my 2021 GA state tax return. Most of 2021 I received severance pay but neglected to remove that from income at the state level. As I understand from research GA would not tax that, but my employer continued to pay those taxes as seen on the W2. How or where in Turbotax do I enter the severance amount? MY W2 has it lumped in with the total compensation.
Thanks,
MC

Severance pay is taxable income on both a federal and state tax return.
What makes you believe it would not be Georgia taxable income?
I saw it several places, including somewhere on a forum. But this below was taken from a FAQ page on the GA department of revenue site:
Severance pay received by a nonresident is not taxable for Georgia purposes. Nontaxable severance pay is defined as pay that is received for which no services are rendered in Georgia. Any portion of the income included in the W-2 that is received for past or future services rendered in Georgia, including accrued vacation, sick pay, and holidays, will still be taxable for Georgia purposes as is outlined in the next question. For example, a taxpayer is terminated by a Georgia employer but the employer agrees to pay them $500.00 per week severance pay for two weeks. No services are required to be rendered to receive this pay. The first week the taxpayer receives a check for $1100.00, which includes $500.00 of severance pay and $600.00 of accrued vacation pay. The $600.00 accrued vacation pay is taxable for Georgia purposes but the $500.00 severance pay is not taxable. The next week the taxpayer receives a check for $500.00 for severance pay. This is not taxable for Georgia purposes.
If you were not a resident of Georgia in 2021 you will need proof from your employer that the income reported on your 2021 tax return for Georgia Income and Georgia taxes withheld was incorrect on the W-2. The employer would need to provide a corrected W-2 for the Georgia income and taxes withheld.
Just amending the Georgia state tax return without any type of proof that severance income was included on the W-2 will be rejected.
