Solar tax credit

We will be having to replace the roof on the sides where we're installing solar panels. Can the cost of those improvements be included in the solar tax credit (only the portions of the roof where we're installing the panels NOT the entire roof, of course)

NO.

You can deduct extra costs associated with installing the solar panels, but not the entire cost of the renovation.  For example, if 2x6 rafters are acceptable to code in your area but you need to upgrade to 2x8 to carry the weight of the solar, then the extra cost of the upgrade is includable as a solar cost for the credit.

Thank you very much, Champ. I am only referring to the cost of replacing/repairing the shingles on the roof faces where we're mounting the panels. That sounds in line with your recommendations. Thank you.

@gardner56

The credit for energy efficient improvements to your home including solar panels is located as part of the deductions and credits interview in the section for “your home“.  If you don’t see it, you may need to click something like “show me more options” or “let me choose what to work on”.

With TurboTax Online open,

  1. Click the Federal tab in the left pane
  2. Click the Deductions & Credits tab near the top
  3. Scroll down to Your Home, and click the Show more dropdown on the right
  4. Click Start or Revisit to the right of Home Energy Credits

From there, you'll be able to enter your information during the interview process.

You may be able to claim a credit of 26% of your costs of qualified solar electric property or solar water heating property using Form 5695, Residential Energy Credits.
