If he had income, he is old enough to file taxes. There is no age limit for filing taxes.  Is your rejection error that his social security number has already been filed?  If so, he probably said that no one else can claim him.

To fix this, you will need to print and mail your return as it will be rejected until his is fixed and he will need to amend his return and say that he is a dependent and can be claimed.  If he is getting a refund of more than what he paid in, he will probably need to pay back the extra he received. He may not have received extra because of his age, however, if he has a refund of more than what he had withheld from his pay, the excess is likely to need to be returned.

The Amend forms are not available until Feb 23rd. He can click the following link for instructions on how to amend. Amend My Return

My son's return has been rejected because his 19 year old daughter, who lives at home and is a student , filed her federal taxes first.  I tried to refile her taxes to make sure they were correct, but they have not been accepted.  Also, I don't think New York State will accept a mailed form that was done on turbo tax.  Can you help?

@bomilton45 If your son's child filed a tax return that says she cannot be claimed as a dependent ----and your son's return is claiming her----he cannot e-file this year.   She has already put her SSN into the system and the only way to correct that will be for her to amend using a Form 1040X later in the season.....but even after she does that, your son will not be able to e-file.   His return now has to be printed, signed and mailed.

And....yes, it is possible to mail a NY tax return.

New York prefers e-filed returns, but there are certain circumstances that make it necessary for you to file your NY return by mail and the state DOES allow mailed returns.    If you could not or did not e-file your federal return then your NY return cannot be e-filed.   It has to be mailed.   It is not possible to e-file any state return if the federal return was not e-filed and accepted by the IRS.

As for whatever you tried to do with the daughter's tax return----change it back to the way it looked originally.   When it is amended, she has to be able to work from it as originally filed when she prepares the1040X.

Students and teenagers make this mistake a lot----if it is any comfort.   They are inexperienced at filing and have no idea what a mess they are creating for their parents when they say they cannot be claimed.
