Why am I paying in on state taxes? I already paid them out of my checks?

If you didnt have enough withheld, you'll end up paying the rest on the tax return.

One guess is that you did not have enough withheld from your pay.  Check all of your entries, though.  Make sure you entered box 17 of your W-2  correctly.
