I am going to be working in NC full year 2022 and renting an apartment there. I own a home in WV and will not be changing my license, voting place, cars or anything out of WV. My “home” will be WV but only reside in the state a few weeks per year, how will I handle state income taxes?

The general rule is: your report all your income on your home state return, even the income earned out of state. You file a non-resident state return for the state you worked in and pay tax to that state. Your home state will give you a credit, or partial credit, for what you paid the non-resident state. You will have to file a non resident NC state return and pay NC tax on the income earned there.. You will also file a WV full year resident return and calculate tax on ALL your income. WV will give you a credit, or partial credit, for the tax you pay NC. So, there will be little or no double taxation, but you have the cost and hassle of filing two state returns. Do the nonresident state return first.
A separate question is will NC accept that you are not a resident for tax purposes. If your immediate family continues to live in home, you own, in WV, then you are still a WV resident. Beyond that, it depends on the circumstances, particularly your "intent". See page 5 at https://files.nc.gov/ncdor/documents/files/2019-D-401-Instructions_0.pdf#page=5
Thank you for the information, yes my family is staying at my current residence in WV. I am the only one renting/staying in NC during the week days. I am not changing anything, drivers license, bank, car registration, insurance, voter registration will all stay in WV.
So if I read that correct I will be filing resident of WV and non-resident of NC for tax purposes.
Q. So if I read that correct I will be filing resident of WV and non-resident of NC for tax purposes?
