Non Resident Filing

My spouse is a travel nurse so I lived in multiple states in 2022. I didn't change my address with my employer because my permanent residence is in Wisconsin but I believe I need to file as a nonresident for MN and AZ since I temporarily lived in those states for about 90 days each. Since my address didn't change in the system with my employer they said they are not able to send a corrected W-2, how should I file my state taxes in this case?

In addition to your resident state, you'll have to file nonresident MN and AZ income tax returns.

    • Generally, you’ll need to file a nonresident state return if you made money from sources in a state you don’t live in.

To ensure accurate calculations, always complete the non-resident return(s) first if filing in multiple states because your resident state might give you a credit for any taxes paid in that situation.

I'm concerned that my W-2 is incorrect though since I only have one for Wisconsin and not Minnesota/Arizona. Is my employer required to correct my W-2 in these cases? They have stated that they won't because the address wasn't updated in the system during that time period.

No, there is no correction that needs to be made. Your W2 only lists the states you had tax withheld from. You will likely have a balance due to Minnesota and Arizona since you had no withholdings from your wages in these states.

The information above from HelenC12 explains what you need to do for filing non-resident state returns and the order they should be completed in.
