Mine has been pending for 2 1/2 days. I filed for an extension just now to be on the safe side, in case it gets rejected an I have to mail it in. I owe money but have already paid it electronically today.
Thank you wnetmw. I called Turbotax yesterday. The experts told me that it is OK for pending as long as I had the electronic stamp prove for filing. No need to file extension.
That is true only if the e file return is eventually accepted. If it is rejected and you have to mail the return, then it will be a late filing.
Thank you. You are the expert.
I have the same issue with the NJ filing. It was filed on Apr 15, Apr 19 still not accepted. Could this be a Turbotax system issue?
I called Turbotax and they said it is not there problem. Just wait.
If the filing is rejected, you have 5 days from the due date to correct the error and file again. If you choose to mail it, you can send a copy of the rejection showing it was filed on time.
Amy, I want to understand what is 5 days from the due date exactly mean. Is the due date mean 4/18/23? Or the date I get rejected?
Another question is: I have the electronic file date sent by turbotax, isn't it the equivalent of the physical mail? So what does the new technology help us? I paid $25 to turbotax for the convenience of e-file, and it couldn't prove that I filed on time??
The Intuit Electronic Postmark page only refers to the filing of the federal return and not the state return. You may not have filed the state return at the same time. Turbotax should provide a similar postmark for state returns, but they don't. Actually Turbotax should provide a lot of other things that TaxAct has, but they don't.
The due date was 4/18/2023. There are several states backed up with slow acceptance times today. NJ is just trying to get them processed into their system. The NJ website does not even reference rejected returns but instead references accepted federal returns as the guideline. Since your federal is accepted, I would not be concerned.
If you are, it should be 5 business days to correct and file your return which is 4/25/2023.
Thanks. All.
I am having the same problem. It has been 5 days, and NJ return is still in PENDING status.
NY and Federal was processed almost immediately.
Mine is also still stuck in Pending limbo.
A few years back, NJ rejected my e-filing because it did not like the way the numbers were entered, even though it was the way the 1099B had it and no income was affected. The federal was accepted without problems and Turbotax did not flag it. I revised the numbers and re-transmitted within the grace period. So NJ can reject a return for stupid reasons.
Also the IRS grace period for re-transmission of a corrected e filing is five CALENDAR days from the Due Date of April 18. If NJ follows the same rule and rejects the return after April 23, it may mean mailing in the return.
That is why I filed for an extension on April 18. You can do it electronically on the NJ Division of Taxation website. I know of no downside to filing the extension as long as taxes are paid by the due date and now I have until October to mail in the return if it comes to that.
Thank you very much for the explanation.
Can I still file extension now? Or should I mail in the hard copy? Is it too late to do it today?
It is too late to file for an extension this year. It has to be done by the Due Date.
I would wait to mail in your return until we see what and when NJ does with our e-filing.
I am anxious too. This is my longest wait ever.
