Moved from FL to WI

I moved from FL to WI mid-year in 2024. I started working on my taxes and I am owing a lot in state taxes for WI. It's my understanding that I will need to complete the Form 1NPR as a part-time resident in the state of WI. I just wanted to confirm that's the case though I moved from a state that had no state tax previously (FL). Will filing this form lessen my tax burden to WI? I was super on top of changing my state tax withholding with my employer as soon as I moved to avoid any issues come tax time, but I am wondering if maybe I am showing I am owing so much in WI because it is taking into consideration my wages made throughout the entire year, rather than when I was living and working in WI? Advice would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, Wisconsin Form 1NPR is the Wisconsin tax return form for non-residents and part-year residents. On that form you will note that both your federal income and your Wisconsin income will be entered, but you will only be taxed on the Wisconsin portion.

In the Personal Info section of TT, enter your state of residence as WI, and indicate that you also lived in FL.  Enter the date that you began living in WI.

You need to make sure you've set up your personal information correctly in TurboTax.

Please check:

How do I file a part-year state return?

How do I allocate (split) income for a part-year state return?

Thank you! So it is possible that after filling out the part-time resident form that the amount I am currently showing as due, will lessen?

Yes, it's possible.  You should review the entries on the W-2  to be sure only the resident period earnings are reported for Wisconsin (WI).  Double check your  pay stubs with the income shown for state wages on your W-2.  Only the wages earned in WI should be taxed on the WI return. This should provide a reasonable tax.  Sometimes employers may not make the change timely, however you likely would have noticed this after the move.

The amounts at the top of the TurboTax window are running totals.  You must finish the return completely in order to see the final numbers.
