I appreciate the response.
but, no, unfortunately. It’s definitely turbo tax that’s pulling the error. It is telling me I did not record both states in my W2 “Resident returned with other state source and only reporting Massachusetts source income from Form W-2 box 16.”
which is false, because I definitely reported both on federal - and also reported both for the state as well. And did non-resident first. So now I can’t file for MA because it seems the app can’t get it right. Unfortunate
The program totals up the state amounts. On the w2 entry, you can't enter the MA total, you have to enter what is actually left. So you would enter $25,000 for RI and $50,000 for MA. The federal and RI have the w2 forms already. MA being your resident state needs a corrected entry for proper taxation. Changing the entries to be correct is a good thing.
I work in NY and live in CT. What return should I file first?
@Bob1910 When you live in one state and work in another ---prepare the NON-resident state return first, then prepare the return for the state you live in.
