TT support is horrendous, to say the least. I had a great, kind call center rep, but this is not in their script. I opened a ticket for this on 3/10 and was told they would be calling me back as their engineers could not replicate it. So, after an hour of taking screenshots and proving there's an issue. I received an email after the call stating it was closed. I've called three times since and have never received any type of communication stating they are evening looking at it.
The lack of communication with their call center and reps on this forum telling people incorrect information. I've seen experts tell NYS residents to print their returns. Which NYS doesn't allow if you use tax software. I've been using TT software since 1998, I truly believe I may be looking for a different company to do my taxes next year!
I have a similar issue in that I need to file in two states. Federal and first state have been filed and accepted. Because state two has a later due date, when back in to file second state and got a similar error. Must select federal.
Exactly the same here running TT Deluxe 2020 on a Windows 10 PC. I successfully e-filed federal yesterday (and got accepted by IRS). Today, try to e-file for California, got exact same treatment. Did try with going through the Review then e-file with no luck. Also tried exiting and restarting the TT program, none works.
Good Morning All -
I have the Desktop version. Just by chance I decided to launch TT this morning and surprise - there were updates.
I was able to successfully file my state return -
Hope the same is true for each of you.
I work in Information Tech in my company and as frustrating as it is, I am glad they were able to resolve the issue and get it promoted prior to their anticipated date, and prior to me needing to paper file.
Have a great day -
Thank you IWix! Just launched TT after seeing your comment and it worked for me too. Hopefully everyone is able to file their states now.
Similar issue with NYS - I have reached the 5 max e-files (don't get me started on that) and I'm ok filing by mail for Fed. But NYS REQUIRES e-filing. When TT (Deluxe) announces that I have reached my 5 e-file limit, and even though I am ready with my NYS return, TT shuts me down for NYS e-filing. When I print NYS for filing, the top instruction sheet tells me where and how to mail it, and then the very next page reminds me that "New York State requires this income tax return to be filed electronically," and that since it was prepared using software, "you MUST file it electronically." C'mon Turbo Tax!!!

You will have to print and mail the NY state tax return since the software you are using does not support electronic filing.
New York website for e-filing - https://www.tax.ny.gov/pit/efile/efile_mandate_for_individuals.htm#:~:text=You're%20required%20to%20....

Have you received an acceptable answer from TT yet? (But I'm guessing you have not though..)
IWix: When did you get the update that would allow you to successfully e-file your State? I have not received the update, and I frequently re-start TT expressly for that purpose.
I was able to do an update last week and it worked. I believe it was March 18 when I did mine. There should be a “search for updates” button somewhere in the program. Maybe if you click on that it’ll show up since it doesn’t seem to be finding the update on its own.
Thanks for the response.... "Search for Updates" says I am up-to-date. The last update I had was 3/22/2021 and the "details" tell me only that installation of the "Program Updates" was successful. The details do not bother to tell me the details of what those program updates were. When you say that your update worked, do you mean paper filing the Fed return and then successfully e-filing your State return, as required by your state? What state are you in?
I have been a faithful TT User since at least 1995 and seeing all of these negative comments from other long-timers, I will probably consider something else next year. I get that the "5-E-file limit" is not TT's fault. But when my state REQUIRES me to e-file and my software does not permit it, regardless of how I file my Federal, then I have an issue. Why should I have to go to my state website and enter all my data AGAIN? I know... Preaching to the choir.... 😉
I had e-filed federal to begin with then I was trying to e-file NY state a few days later. Maybe it ended up working for me because I had e-filed federal to start. I believe when I was searching for solutions originally I saw something that said the state wouldn’t go through until federal was accepted (which still didn’t work for me regardless). But maybe that has to do with your issue? TT should have some sort of warning though if it’s not gonna let you e-file a state because you physically mailed federal. What a headache so sorry for your struggles!
