If filing in NY and NM, does it matter which return is filed first with federal ?

It's best to e-file all your tax returns together if possible. If you are not able to do that, you can file either New York or New Mexico first and the second state later.
Both states use federal income as a starting point so either state will accept your return once your federal return is accepted.
If one of them is a non-resident state, do that one first.
You have until Tax Day (Apr 18th this time) to get your tax returns sent in.
What about part-year in NY and first year resident in NM?
