Do I have to pay for the 2nd state to get the information need for Credit for taxes paid to another state. Is there a way to separate the figure and manually enter on my home state return. Ridiculous to have to pay $44 for a piddley little capital gain.

Yes, if you need to file the additional state return. Each state has different filing requirements. If it is a state with a minimum filing, you may not need to file the state and the tax would be zero.

When you take a credit for other states, usually, your resident state requires a copy of the other state. We provide that when e-filing.
I had a capital gain of 7k for RE in VA, NC is the home state. Our AGI is 78K.
