If you already filed, you would have to amend to claim, but if you have not filed yet, you can go back and add it to your return.

To qualify for the California's Renter's Credit, you must meet the following:

  • You paid rent in California for at least 1/2 the year
  • The property was not tax exempt
  • Your California income was:
    • $42,932 or less if your filing status is single or married/registered domestic partner (RDP) filing separately
    • $85,864 or less if you are married/RDP filing jointly, head of household, or qualified widow(er)
  • You did not live with someone who can claim you as a dependent
  • You or your spouse/RDP were not given a property tax exemption during the tax year

The qualification calculation for CA Renter's Credit seems to be inaccurate - how can it count my adjusted gross income for the whole year - when I lived in another state 1/2 the year!?  Seems a bit unfair when I moved here for a job ( can't claim moving expenses to this expensive state ) and yet they count my whole years wages for the credit.  Hmmmm   fooled again.

It would not allow me to change my AGI to reflect CA income only.  My Ca income was only 38008.00

For Part Year Residents, you must use the adjusted gross income from all sources.  You should be able to claim Moving Expenses if you moved INTO California by completing the Moving Expenses in the Deductions & Credits.

If you pay rent on your primary residence, you might be able to claim a tax credit. These are awarded only on the state level—there is no federal renter’s tax credit.

For more info, find your state in the link below to learn what tax credits you may qualify for:

Califonia offers credit to renters who fulfill all of these requirements:

  • Paid rent in California for at least half the year
  • Made $43,533 or less (single or married/registered domestic partner (RDP) filing separately) or $87,066 or less (married/RDP filing jointly, head of household, or qualified widow(er))
  • Didn’t live with someone who can claim them as a dependent
  • Weren’t given a property tax exemption during the tax year

You’ll get $60 if you’re single or married/RDP filing separately or $120 if you’re married/RDP filing jointly, head of household, or qualified widow(er). You can claim this credit when you file your state tax return. You will claim the credit by completing Schedule H in your California return.

Please revisit the interview questions in California. You will get to the section titled "Take a look at California credits and taxes". Once there click on "Renter's Credit" as illustrated below.
