Not much has changed from last year, made a little more, paid a little more in Iowa, but somehow I owe over $1000 this year to the state of Iowa, when I received a refund last year. Is there an issue with the tax software this year? Why such a drastic change? We rarely have to pay in at the end of the year.

Hard to know...print out your tax forms,a dn compare them to last year's forms, line-by-line to see if you mis-entered something critical.
Like mis-entering some income amount in the state section of a W-2 form, or missing a digit on a W-2's state withholding box so the withholding was too low. Any line that is off-kilter in 2019 vs the same thing in 2018

Thanks for the tip! It was actually a filing status thing that was way to hard to find and fix in the program, but I finally did! It made all the difference. Your tip helped me find it though.
