How do I find out why I owe state taxes when I didn’t owe last year and nothing has changed?

First check all of the income amounts and tax withheld amounts you entered from boxes 16 and 17 of your W-2's. Make sure they are correct. If you did not make a mistake with those, then you could print out your 2020 and 2021 state returns and compare them to see what is different. No one in the user forum can see your return so we could only guess. The usual reason for owing the state is that you did not have enough state tax withheld from your paychecks during the year.
You must pay your state tax due using the state’s preferred method of receiving payment. For most states that will be by making a payment to the state’s own tax website, or by mailing a check or money order.
