Why the delay kin the Ohio St. tax availability?  I purchased and downloaded TurboTax in late December to get an idea of my tax situation.  So far, the Ohio state tax software is not available.  Each time I try download the state tax, it indicates it is not available with the date of availability changing each time.  The latest is 1/13/22.  Will it actually be available then?

Don't try until the 14th...BUT

...depending on how the testing between TTX and the Ohio tax department goes, they could delay it more.

But even so, since the IRS isn't starting until 24 Jan, the Ohio part won't be able to go in until AFTER the IRS accepts the Federal filing.

The delay in the availability of state forms is the same every year, always delayed until mid-late Jan, a few even February.  So, using the desktop software for the prior year instead, and creating a test copy, is usually the best way to model the next year (as long as major state changes were not enacted).

Tax Commissioner Jeff McClain said Ohio taxpayers will find a few new changes that could impact the preparation of the state income tax return. Among those:

  • Tax rates for all Ohio taxpayers have been reduced: those with taxable nonbusiness income of $25,000 or less will pay no income tax; the tax rate on nonbusiness income of more than $110,650 is now 3.99%, down from the previous top rate of 4.797%, while all other tax rates have been cut by 3.0%.
  • Old schedules, new names: To better reflect the purpose, Schedule A is now called Ohio Schedule of Adjustments; Schedule J is now called Ohio Schedule of Dependents.
  • Three new education tax credits are available to eligible taxpayers: for donating to a scholarship granting organization, for home school expenses, and for tuition to a non-chartered, non-public school.
