Ohio Deduction for unreimbursed medical expenses

I entered $9561 for unreimbursed medical expenses for my Ohio tax return. On the worksheet for said expenses Turbo Tax entered $8436 on line 3 and $9561 on line 4. This nappears to be an error in the software. I can't figure out where $8436 came from. I believe line 3 should be blank. Correct?

It depends. Line 3 of the unreimbursed medical care expenses worksheet is the amount paid for unreimbursed dental, vision, and health insurance premiums paid during any portion of the year in which you were eligible for Medicare or an employer-paid health care plan through your or your spouse’s employer. Did you pay anything for the year for health insurance premiums and qualified to be covered under Medicare or an employer-paid health care plan?

The only way I got the screen to populate in the Ohio return was to enter premiums paid on the screens of the federal return. In the case of the mock-up return, these premiums flowed from Schedule A.

I still think there is a bug in the program. I entered $9,561 for unreimbursed medical expenses. On the State of Ohio worksheet it shows $8,436 on line 3 and $9,561 on line 4 and then totals the two to show $17,997 on line 5. I can't figure out where $8,436 came from and maintain line 5 should be $9,561

If you would like to delete the $8,436, then go back over your Schedule A entries and ensure that nothing is inputted on the medical screens.

To do so, please follow the instructions below:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Search Schedule A with the magnifying glass tool.
  3. Click Jump to Schedule A
  4. Go through the screens and clear any wrong information entered.

After this is completed, your Ohio return should not show the Line 3 amount anymore.

I did not enter any incorrect information. I entered $9,561 for unreimbursed medical expenses. The Ohio worksheet should show that amount on line 3, $0 on line 4 and $9,561 again on line 5. Instead TurboTax shows $8,436 (?) on line 3, $9,561 on line 4 and $17,997 on line 5. I don't know where the $8,436 comes from. It's not a number I entered anywhere.

If you are still getting an error, it would be helpful to have a TurboTax ".tax2021" file that is experiencing this issue.

You can send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information. If you would like to do this, here are the instructions: Go to the black panel on the left side of your program and select Tax Tools.

  1. Then select Tools below Tax Tools.
  2. A window will pop up which says Tools Center.
  3. On this screen, select Share my file with Agent.
  4. You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is. Click okay through this screen and then you will get a Token number.
  5. Reply to this thread with your Token number. This will allow us to open a copy of your return without seeing any personal information.

We will then be able to see exactly what you are seeing and we can determine what exactly is going on in your return and provide you with a resolution.
