Should an Illinois resident filing a 1040 with earnings of $1735 also file a Missouri 1040 nonresident for earnings of $532 as no fed or state taxes were withheld in MO?

The taxpayer is a student who hopes to get a refund on federal and Illinois state taxes withheld. The student files as "someone who can claim you as a dependent" on the Federal 1040. How can I determine if taxes are due to Missouri where the student earned $532 as a nonresident. Adjusted income is $2,687 on the federal return which includes dividend and capital gains.

No, with that income, the student is not required to file a Missouri return.

According to the State of Missouri:

"you may not have to file a Missouri return if:

  • you are a resident and have less than $1,200 of Missouri adjusted gross income;
  • you are a nonresident with less than $600 of Missouri income; or
  • your Missouri adjusted gross income is less than the amount of your standard deduction plus your personal exemption."
