TN does not have a state income tax, so leave those boxes empty.

Does his W-2 have any Box 15-20 entries for AL?

Regardless of what  the hard copy of the W-2 shows, or even if it is blank, at the W-2 screen in TT, put AL in box 15 and the box 1 amount in box 16.  Leave 17-20 blank.

Another thing: in the personal info section, when TT asks if you made income in another state, answer No, because TN no longer has an income tax  (the TT software apparently  hasn't been updated).  That should prevent TT from thinking your income has to be split between two states.

Apparently your son's employer isn't withholding AL taxes for him.  So your son should request his employer to begin withholding AL taxes from his pay ASAP.  If the employer can't or won't do that, your son should begin making quarterly estimated tax payments to AL for 2022, so as to avoid a large tax bill (plus possible penalties) next year.  The TurboTax program should print the necessary forms for him.
