Minnesota property tax renter rebate criteria incorrect?

When filling out my state refund though TurboTax, the software is telling me I don't qualify for the renter's property tax rebate because our Adjusted Gross Income is above $64,000, but my 2021 AGI is less than $50,000, this doesn't make any sense to me, and I've gone through everything again just to be sure I didn't make any mistakes, is there a glitch or something?

Your eligibility for the renter’s property tax refund isn’t limited based only on your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) – your total household income must be less than $64,920.

There are a number of sources of income that go into the calculation – nontaxable Social Security and the deduction for contributions to a qualified retirement plan, for example.  So, although your AGI may be below $50,000, your total household income may be above the limitation amount.

Total household income, for renters, is computed on line 13 of 2021 M1PR, Property Tax Refund Return.  See Renter’s Worksheet on page 19 of the 2021 Property Tax Refund Return (M1PR) Instructions for more information.

So I went through those instructions, and even with every student tax credit, etc, we're still under 64K I don't understand, is there someone I can speak with?

Yes. You can  Contact Us or upload and switch to a Live Expert doing your return or just get help along the way. Of course, we in Community are still here to help as well. If you are willing, you can give me a diagnostic  (scrubbed free of personal information) version of your return to view.

  • If you are online, go to tax tools>tools > share file with agent > 6 digit number pops up.
  • If on desktop, go to online >send tax file to agent > number pops.

Minnesota property tax renter rebate criteria incorrect?

My husband and I have 10 kids at home still, which we support 100%. We paid $16,200 in rent this year, which hasn't changed in the last 8 years that I've filled with turbo tax. We've gotten the refund every year, but this year it didn't give it to me. We make well under the $69,000 or whatever it is. I already submitted the e file thinking it was going to pop up with the form for me to submit afterwards, but it didn't. We normally receive $2000+ from the renter's rebate so I'm bawling my eyes out right now because I screwed it up somehow. What do I do?

You can mail it in. See Filing for a Property Tax Refund. It states:

Complete and send us Form M1PR, Homestead Credit Refund (for Homeowners) and Renter's Property Tax Refund. If you are filing as a renter, include any Certificates of Rent Paid (CRPs) you received.

See the Form M1PR instructions for filing details.
