Both the federal form 1040 and form IL-1040 require me to attach my W-2 in order to paper file my tax return. Does this mean I have to get a second copy of my W-2? Is there a way to get it back after I mail it to one so I can send it to the other? Clearly I'm required to send a copy to both state and federal revenue services, but I'm not sure what's the most efficient/painless way of doing so.
Oh, and thanks for your hard work on this site!

No you don't get them back. Usually your employer should give you like 4 copies all on one sheet or separate. Or you can copy it yourself on your printer or at a store. Or a friend or family might have a printer you can use.
Okay, I didn't think the IRS would accept a photo-copy of a W-2. I thought it had to be something more formal. My employer did only give me the one copy, so I'll make another.
Thanks so much for the swift reply!
