I moved from IL to NC in 2019 and when I filed my returns TurboTax said the taxes I would not be paying enough taxes to NC through my pension and SS and would need to make quarterly payments. Well that turned out to be incorrect and I ended up paying way to much to NC and ended up with a large refund coming.
I finished my taxes 11 weeks ago and because of the large amount expected back from NC I paid the money to file electronically to the state; this was the first time I ever did a electronic filing to a state. I have been waiting ever since for my money and after 6 weeks (what is suppose to be the average wait time for electronic filing in NC) I started checking the status weekly but it constantly said it was in the 2nd phase; the review phase.
Well I got a letter today from them stating I needed to send them my entire Federal Tax return for review to be completed. My question is, why didn't TurboTax send that information with the state return? From what I can see if I had submitted my return via the mail I would have had to include my Federal return so why didn't TurboTax do that electronically?
It looks like I wasted $20 to file it electronically and will end up waiting longer had I just filed it via the mail (they say 8 weeks average for a refund when filing via the mail; at this stage I'll be lucky to get it in 16 weeks). Not happy and frustrated with TurboTax.

TurboTax did not send a complete copy of your federal return to North Carolina because that is not normally required for e-filing.
If North Carolina is asking for a complete copy of your federal return, it means the state has questions. It's entirely possible NC is asking for your federal return because it is unable to get a copy from the IRS like it normally does because the IRS is so backed up. Or it may want to look at some details to find out how what's behind some of the numbers.
