To claim this credit, a domestic content certification statement must be attached to Form 8835, Renewable Electricity Production Credit or Form 3468, Investment Credit and filed with the taxpayer’s annual return submitted to the IRS for the first taxable year in which the taxpayer reports a domestic content bonus credit amount.
TurboTax does not support form 8835. See this TurboTax Help article.
You would have to download form 8835 from the link above and fill it in manually.
Your tax return can't be e-filed. It has be printed out and filed by mail.
Thanks, do you know if you are only eligible for this credit if you are a business or can the credit be used for residential installs?
Reading your first question, you want to claim your home solar panels on Form 5695. Minh is correct to claim the domestic content bonus requires a different set of forms and circumstances.
Your second question:
2024 Instructions for Form 8835 state: Use a separate Form 8835 to claim the credit for electricity that you produced from certain renewable resources at each qualified facility.
Hi AmyC,
Thank you for responding. I contacted my solar installation company and they said that they are 100% sure my installation should qualify for the bonus, even without a home business. But maybe they are mistaken or dishonest? How do you know if a home is a "qualified facility"?
From what I've seen I need to be able to include a Domestic Content Certificate Statement with the following:
I might also have to specify that the project has a maximum net output of less than 1 megawatt of electrical energy.
But this is all very confusing. I've read through a ton of IRS information on this and answers on various forums, but I'm just seeing a lot of conflicting answers.
Thanks again for reading this and responding.
I find many dealers are told the new laws but not all the details. The 2024 Instructions for Form 8835 state on page 3 a list of qualified facilities.
