Hello,
I have simple tax returns of primarily wages earned. I have three state tax returns total. I have had one state tax return and the federal tax return go through already and the other two state tax returns made sense and were able to be efiled. I did not have any NY state tax withheld. My two non-resident tax returns that gave me a deduction of $259 for my resident state tax return (New York) plus another $20 for a total of $279. On my New York tax return, my tax based on my taxable income is $817. I should be paying the difference of $538. However, the result that I get is that I owe 0 tax somehow and it doesn't make sense to me how that is possible.
I was not able to efile my New York State tax return for some reason this year, although my return is simple and I have been able to efile in the past. The state return also requires efiling when the tax program used supports it, (which it normally would). I was given instructions to print the return and send it. The error message I got was that my state tax return is
And when I print the tax return, on the coversheet, I get
Where there is a line to pay this $538, my bank info is missing and the box to pay the $538 isn't filled out. I could fill it out and it would fix the problem, but when the barcode is scanned, this info might not be read as it is inputted after the form was printed. It isn't clear why I wouldn't pay this $538. I called Turbo Tax support and the agent told me to send the tax return and I am reluctant to do so because I am fairly certain I owe $538.
I tried to remove any zero's that were inputted elsewhere and in the federal tax return section- that didn't help. I tried to delete the NY State tax and start over, and I wasn't able to. When I hit start over, I get brought to a screen that says I have already started the NY state tax return. I went over the info, and I still get brought to owing 0 somehow. Which if it is true, there are no complaints but it doesn't make sense to me.

From the screenshot provided, the calculation of tax owed would be $538 to New York State, which agrees to the coversheet. What does your IT-201 say on page 4, Line 80? It should say $538. It might just be an error on the summary page that is printed for your records. Be assured that what matters to New York State is what it states on your tax return.
Please send the $538 owed via check to New York State. If you do not pay this amount, and New York determines you owe this after the due date of the return, you will owe penalties and interest.
Since you are not able to pay electronically, please send your IT-201V with your $538 check to:
STATE PROCESSING CENTER
PO BOX 15555
ALBANY NY 12212-5555
Lastly, you were probably not able to e-file because your New York return had Form IT-2 attached. Form IT-2, Summary of Wages, is unsupported by TurboTax.
On the coversheet, it says that I both owe $538 and that I don't owe anything at the same time- in error.
However, on the tax return, Turbo Tax filled out 0 for box 80.
Line 61 & 62 (Total New York State, New York City, Yonkers, and sales or use taxes, MCTMT, and
voluntary contributionsIT-201) is filled out as $538 which is correct. It is 0 all through line 80. Line 72 -Total New York State tax withheld is 0- which is true to my situation. Line 76- Total payments- is 0. Page 4, 80 -Amount you owe (if line 76 is less than line 62, subtract line 76 from line 62) - suddenly has 0 instead of $538. When the barcode is scanned, it will read as me owing $0 without explanation, when it should be $538. I can send the return along with IT-201V and a check, and a letter stating that the actual amount owed is $538 despite the number in box 80 being listed as 0 if that is the best option here (please let me know). Since this return could only be filed through mail, it seemed like I could try to go back and play with the numbers to get the return to put the correct number in box 80- but to no avail. The other option would be to transfer over the data from this Turbo Tax -made return onto fillable pdf forms from the state's website.
"Lastly, you were probably not able to e-file because your New York return had Form IT-2 attached. Form IT-2, Summary of Wages, is unsupported by TurboTax."
NY State requires this summary of wages form and it states to use this form instead of submitting federal W-2s. In 2019, I was able to e-file, and Form IT-2 was a part of the return. Unless something changed from Form IT-2 being supported this year, it seems to have been supported last year.
Mine says the same thing, "0" except that for sure, according to simple math, I am supposed to get a refund ! The other exception is that I am only using W-2's. My only guess is that the formula for the total isn't in the box. I'm not going to file through Turbo tax this year if this continues to be a problem. Think about it- ZERO ?? No refund, I don't owe- not one penny either way ? Makes ZERO sense !
It's strange, there seems to be a glitch for this box 80. Turbo Tax should fix this. For next year, Turbo Tax should also add Form IT-2 to the list of supported forms as it is a requirement when efiling for NY state.
Would the best method be to submit the tax return anyway with a check and corresponding additional form plus a letter stating that I owe tax despite box 80 claiming 0? Or would it be best to transfer over the information from the turbo tax return to pdf versions from the state's website to avoid any rejections. I cannot efile just a state tax elsewhere since I already filed the federal return.
Seems to me (now) that the issue is only on the free version. I would do the "send a note" thing I suppose, especially if u know how much you owe. That HAS to be done, even if all the paperwork was wrong. I think the IRS would be able to figure it out, and you will be free of interest.
This is not a free version only. I have premier and I was on phone for 2 hours with turbo tax today. The conclusion of the call was I had to upgrade to a premier live twice the amount so I could talk with a tax specialist who could not meet me until next Friday. I’ve used TurboTax for the last 10 years and have never had to upgrade to a loved Version or have any issues efiling the State taxes. So they better go good for this this year or they will lose me for good.
Why are some people I know have the same issue being forced to mail it in and others can efile? Don’t we all as NYers have to submit the IT-2??? How can a required form be unsupported? I want answers and no one has them
