If I share an apartment with someone in New York City, do I have to add them as a household member for the State return? Because then it asks about their income?

Why would I have to do the above if I am a single filer.  If I live with someone and they are not a dependent, wouldn't I just leave that blank?

You do not count your roommates as your household members on your tax return. You will file the return with just your income information. Your roommate will also file their own taxes as single individuals on their own.
