I'm filling two state taxes, MD and NC. The turbotax form for NC doesn't appear to have a spot for entering my "17. State Income Tax". Has anyone else had this problem?

Was able to fill out the MD form correctly. For NC, turbotax asked me when I moved and what my taxable income is was for NC this year, but doesn't account for the taxes I have already paid to NC. I don't see anywhere on the form to enter that info and the actual tax document generated shows nothing for my Tax Credits. Just an N.C Income Tax and nothing subtracted against it.

When you have two state returns that have to be filed and you were a part-year resident in each of these steps or if you work in one state and am a non-resident and live in the other state you need to file the returns in a certain order so that TurboTax can give the prior credits.

Always, prepare the non-resident state or the state you moved from first.   Then prepare the resident state or the state you moved to.    For a part-year resident return, make sure you put the dates for residence in each of the state returns.

My suggestion would be to delete both of the state returns you have started.  Then add the first state return in the order I stated above, then add the second one.   I think this will take care of most of the problems you are having.

Thank you for the response. Unfortunately whenever I try to delete one of the state returns it automatically starts the flow for inputing data for that state. There doesn't seem to be a way to delete both or start fresh. Or at least I haven't found it so far.

Have you paid for your TurboTax already?  Here is some information on deleting state returns.  To delete state return, follow the instructions below.   You can delete your TurboTax Online state return as long as you haven't paid for it yet (or registered in a free version):

  1. Sign in to your return, if you're not already signed in. (To do this, sign in to TurboTax and select the orange Take me to my return button.)
  2. Click State Taxes near the top of your screen, and then Select Your State Returns.
  3. On that screen, click the Delete link right next to the Edit button, and then answer Yes. If you don't see the Edit or Delete button on the Your State Returns screen and haven't paid or registered, please do the following:
  4. Click State Taxes.
  5. Select the Your State Returns screen.
  6. Click Start next to the state you want to delete.
  7. After the transfer of the information completes, click Continue.
  8. Once the next screen has loaded, click State Taxes and then select Your State Returns.
  9. Click Delete next to the state that you want deleted. Click Yes.
  10. In some cases, you won't see the option to delete, just Edit and Start Over. This is because you either already paid for your state or registered your free version while that state was attached to your return.

Another option

  1. What state is listed first in the list of state returns?   Is it the non-resident or resident return.
  2. If it is the resident return, try deleting the resident return,
  3. Then click on edit to the non-resident return and go through the questions.
  4. When you are done with the non-resident state and click on Done it will take you back to the list of state returns.
  5. Select Add a State and add the resident state.
  6. Go through and answer the questions.    Make sure that you put in the dates of residency under General Info for both states.
  7. Also make sure that you have chosen Part-Year Resident on both.
  8. When you have completed the resident state return, do a review and then check to see if that fixed the problem.   I
  9. f that does not fix the problem, I hate to say it but you might have start over if you can.

If nothing at all works for you, one last thing we can try is for you to send us a token number (we will be able to access your return with this token number, but we will not be able to see any private information).  Possibly we can figure out what is causing the problem.   If you would like to send us a token number,

  1. While in TurboTax go to Tax Tools
  2. Click on Tools
  3. Click on Share my file with an Agent
  4. When you click on Share my file with an Agent it will give you a six digit number.
  5. Send that six digit number to us in a response and we can then access and take a look at your return.

It ended up being a silly mistake on my part. My W2 only imported my MD state return. After I manually entered my NC state return, I was able to go back and redo my state taxes correctly
