You can’t arbitrarily decide which state is your home. That decision is based on multiple factors including what are the locations of your bank accounts, where do you go to church, where do you visit your doctors, where are you registered to vote, where your car is registered, etc.

If you lived in two different states during the tax year, then it sounds like you should prepare part-year returns for each of those states.  What states did you live in?  Provide some dates----when did you move from state #1 to state #2?

To clarify, you file part-year resident returns only if you literally moved from one state to the other during the tax year.

However, if your situation is that you own homes in two states and spend time in both, then state law will determine which is your State of Residence for state income tax purposes.  As @Bsch4477 said, you can't just pick and choose.

Bottom line: we need more details about your situation in order to answer your question correctly.  What are the two states?  How much time did you spend in each during the year?  In what state is your drivers license, vehicle registration, voter registration?  In which state do you work?

I did a pretty poor job of explaining the question.  I split my time between two states.  I am retired from a job in one state and get no $ from the other state. I am aware I would have to change some things to change my residency to the other state,

What I wanted to do was to do a mock return as if I changed my residency to see what the tax consequences would be if I changed residency.

I bought a second copy of Turbotax so I could do this, but I don’t know how  to get rid of the old state so I could compare. I was hoping I would not have to start from scratch as I have a lengthy return.

And...we still do not know what two states you are talking about.  We do not know if those states both have state income tax or whether they have reciprocal agreements, etc. etc. etc.

Not sure why you purchased a second copy of the software.  That will not help you.   You cannot download/install two copies of the desktop software onto the same computer.   You could, however, pay to download the "second" state's software and try preparing "dummy" returns to see how the state returns work out if you tell the software you live in the other state and prepare a resident return for that state.   You do not have to "get rid" of the state program for the state you are currently living in and filing a return for.    Downloading a second state program will cost you about $40.

The CD/download lets you do many things to try out various scenarios.   You can prepare returns using information to "try out" situations without filing those returns.

Or.....use the paper forms or the state's website to prepare a return for that other state just to see how it comes out.   You will need information from your federal return.   You have not provided any details here as to what sorts of income you receive; if you would provide some details we could be more helpful.  We do not know if you are receiving Social Security, a pension, distributions from a retirement plan.....etc. etc.  Some states tax Social Security, some do not.  Some states tax other kinds of retirement income; some do not.
