TurboTax is trying to see if you are eligible to itemize. If you live in a state with no state tax, you can deduct state and local sales tax paid.

  1. When asked how you want to enter your sales tax, select EasyGuide.
  2. Answer the questions on the next few screens. When you get to the Major Purchases screen, answer Yes.
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions to enter your info.

These instructions can also be found in the original article here.

Does your state have a sales tax? enter that as a percentage.

If you won't be itemizing, don't bother.
