TurboTax is trying to see if you are eligible to itemize. If you live in a state with no state tax, you can deduct state and local sales tax paid.
- When asked how you want to enter your sales tax, select EasyGuide.
- Answer the questions on the next few screens. When you get to the Major Purchases screen, answer Yes.
- Follow the onscreen instructions to enter your info.
These instructions can also be found in the original article here.

Does your state have a sales tax? enter that as a percentage.
If you won't be itemizing, don't bother.
