Form 309 is asking you to confirm the income you earned in Arizona that is also being picked up on your resident (California) return.
Since you were a full-year resident of California, you are taxed on all income regardless of source. Your other state tax credit on your California return will offset the taxes paid to Arizona, so you are not paying taxes twice.
Hi Lena,
Thank you for replying to my question.
I get that "Inc subj to tax by oth st" can be extrapolated to "income subject to tax by other state" but that still didn't help me. Since I'm not exactly the sharpest tool in the shed, it would have been nice if the instructions said something like "subtract the amount in box Y on form Z from the amount in box X on form W and enter that number here" or something like that.
Eventually, I was able to resolve the issue by deleting and starting completely over on the AZ state tax section. Turns out I had failed to claim a certain credit involving my CA taxes. Once I did that, the original error message went away. Phew!
Anyway, hopefully if someone else is stymied by the same error message they'll see this.
Jeff
Did you figure it out im trying to do mine?
I think I solved it by deleting the form and starting over. I had forgotten to claim a credit the first time around. Check my original reply from Feb 17, 2021. Good luck.
Thank you for the reply how do you delete the form?
Hmmmm, sorry. It's been a couple years, can't remember the exactly. I had to repeat the steps a few times, trying different options each time.
If you complete your CA return before you do your non-resident AZ return, the program should do this calculation for you.
