How should we file our taxes this year if I lived in Texas and earned my income in Texas, but my wife lived in Illinois and earned her income in Illinois?

I transferred and worked in Texas for 2024, but my wife stayed in Illinois. We usually file jointly with me as head of household. How should we file this year? I didn't have any IL income tax taken out since I lived in Texas, but my wife had IL tax taken out for IL since she lived there.

If you file a joint federal return and one spouse is a full-year Illinois resident while the other is a nonresident, you may choose to file "married filing separately." TurboTax will divide each item of income and deduction shown on your joint federal return between the separate Illinois returns.

If you choose to file a joint Illinois return, you must treat both you and your spouse as residents.  This is not ideal since you live in Texas, which has no income tax.
