How do I change how much is being taxed in NYS? When I edit the % of eligible income to NYS it leaves the wages as the full annual income instead of the percentage I gave

I moved halfway through the year. When I try to edit my W-2 allocation by listing ~50% and click complete it still shows the total state wages as 100% of my income instead of the ~50% that were earned while a resident of NY state (the company I work for is not located in NYS).

It seems as if you are trying to determine the NY portion of your income while filing your return.  The TurboTax software performs all of the allocations if you enter your W-2 information as reported on the W-2 and file accurately.

You should file a NY part year return plus a resident return for the state you moved to in 2022.  You will not be double taxed because the allocation will separate the income if you answer the questions accurately.

Important:  Prepare the NY Part Year return before preparing your current state return.  This is key for the allocation to be correct.

I’m not sure how to confirm this but it seems incorrect. Let’s pretend my income was 100K for the year. I lived in CT for 6 months and then moved to NY so 50K income for both states while resident in each. My federal AGI is listed as 100k. Great. For state forms however (using “tools” - “tax summary”, it lists CT AGI (STTI) as 100K (even though income while resident of that state was 50K) and NY AGI (NYAGI) as 100k with NY Taxable Income (TAXINC) (after std itemized deduction and exemption) as 81K (even though income while resident of the state was 50K). I listed the allocated income as 50% on each state’s partial resident return guided inputs (starting with CT, the state I moved from, and ending with NY, the state I moved to).

New York state will tax all of your income in and out of state. Then, they will apportion the tax rate based on the income you earned out of state versus in state. So, when you look at the New York tax summary, it looks like you are being taxed on all of your income, but because the tax rate is reduced by the percentage of income earned out of state, you are really not.
