If you have preapproval from Georgia for the Education Expense Credit and have received the Form QEE-TP1 from the Department of Revenue and Form QEE-SSO1 from the student scholarship organization, then you can e-file your state tax return without any attachments.

Enter the Education Expense Credit in the Georgia state program in the Credits section of the state program.  On Education Expense Credit click on the start or revisit button.  Enter the amounts and check the boxes shown as needed on the screen Additional Info for the Education Expenses Credit

I just input m $2,500 donation amount and my GA tax refund only went up by $2K, not $2,500.  What gives?

MFJ $2,500 as the lesser of makes sense. Looking at 2020 Qualified Education Expense Tax Credit - Georgia I see there are reasons to not qualify for the full amount.

  • The taxpayer must add back to Georgia taxable income the amount of any federal charitable contribution deduction taken on a federal return for which a Georgia qualified education expense credit is allowed.
  • The tax credit shall not be allowed if the taxpayer designates the taxpayer’s qualified education expense for a particular individual.
  • The amount of the credit that exceeds the taxpayer’s income tax liability can be used against the next succeeding five years’ tax liability.

@AmyC How do you  "add back to Georgia taxable income the amount of any federal charitable contribution deduction taken on a federal return for which a Georgia qualified education expense credit is allowed"?  I have been trying to figure out how to do this within Turbotax and getting quite confused!

@edakim  Here's how:

  1. If you wrote off this contribution in your federal as an itemized deduction to charity, it needs to be added back into your GA income. You can't claim this income as a deduction and as a credit for GA.
  2. Return to the GA state section
  3. Go to Here's the income GA handles differently
  4. Scroll down to Other Additions to GA income
  5. Start
  6. Description - QEE deducted on federal sch A
  7. Amount $$
  8. Done
