The other day I messaged about what I need to do if I didn't include my SSA-1099 information on my federal return. DoninGA replied back saying I needed to wait until I got the federal refund before filing an amendment. Does the same apply to my Michigan State taxes? They haven't been filed yet because Turbotax said they're waiting for updates from the state of Michigan... so can I amend it before filing?

No, do not try to amend the Michigan state tax return. You wait for the federal return to either be accepted or rejected. Then make your changes to the federal tax return.
The information from the federal return flows to the state return. Once the federal return has been corrected then you can complete and file the state return.
Yes, you will wait until you amend your federal return to file your state return. When you amend your federal return the changes will automatically update on your state return.
My federal was accepted, so when I do an amendment do I use turbo tax to amend it and add my SSA-1099's for the wife and I? Or do I have to use form 1040X to amend it, and if so, how do I then amend my Michigan state tax return?
Once you make changes during amending the federal tax return, those changes flow to the state tax return. After completing the amending of the federal tax return for the Social Security benefits, you can e-file the Michigan tax return.
If the return is accepted you will have to amend your original tax return. An amended return, Form 1040-X, can only be printed and mailed to the IRS if the original tax return was not e-filed. The IRS will take up to 20 weeks or longer to process an amended tax return.
Before starting to amend the tax return, wait for the tax refund to be received or the taxes due to be paid and processed by the IRS.

My federal was accepted according to TurboTax... so how do I amend my Michigan state tax return to show our SSA-1099 income if I can't use TurboTax to amend my federal return and put our SSA-1099 income information in? Can I use TurboTax to fill out the 1040-X form?
I am so confused. I wish TurboTax would have been more specific on what SSI was. I thought SSI meant "Supplemental Security Income" (A needs-based program providing financial assistance to individuals with limited income and resources) which we don't get.
The wife gets SSDI (social security disability) and I get Social Security.

You use TurboTax to amend the federal tax return. The amended return is a Form 1040-X.
When you enter your Social Security benefits in the amended return, those amounts will flow to the Michigan return.
One the amended return is completed, you can then e-file the Michigan tax return.
But I have to wait to amend it, after I get the federal refund from IRS, before I can go in and enter the SSA-1099 income?
