Hello, I have a couple of questions when using TurboTax for two states.
RESIDENCY
I lived out of state in Michigan for 10 months of 2024 and only spent 2 months here in Missouri
I'm filing as a part-time resident in the prior state (MI)
Can I also be a part-time resident in Missouri since I've only been there for 2 mos?
TurboTax defaults to Resident, and there is no way I can see to change it.
MISSOURI TAXES
Even though I stated that 10 months of my income was earned in MI (Using the "Taxes paid to Michigan" option.) When I look at my Missouri bottom line it shows my taxable income higher than it should be.
I also put the income I earned in MI in the "Other Income Also Taxed" and "Federal Adjustments" but nothing changed. Somehow my Missouri state taxes are more than double my MI taxes and I only lived here for 2 months. What am I missing?

You must go through the credit for taxes paid to another state to reduce your Missouri tax owed. There is a screen where you can indicate that you want to be a nonresident or resident.
A part-year resident is treated as a nonresident but may determine his tax as if a resident for the entire year. As a part-year resident, you may take either the Missouri resident credit fro taxes paid to another state or pay tax on the Missouri income percentage (as a nonresident).
Thank you for the reply!
Re:

- I believe I did this. When prompted to provide "Other income taxed" and "Income from Michigan" and "Federal Adjustments" I put in what I paid taxes on in Michigan. It's still showing my Missouri taxable income to be $77K when it should be closer to $30K.
Re: "There is a screen where you can indicate that you want to be a nonresident or resident."
-There was for Michigan (the first state I filed), but not for Missouri. I wonder If the system is assuming I'm a full-time resident since I'm not filing as a FT resident in Michigan.
Thanks again!
For Missouri, you have two options: File as a Resident (all income is taxed but you get a credit fore the taxes paid to Michigan) or Nonresident (where you would only pay tax on the Missouri income $30K). Below is the screen where you can select-you can see it if you go back to General Info. In most cases, there is not a big difference either way, unless you were in a no-income-tax state, in which case the Nonresident is better.
You will see all the income taxed in Missouri if you selected Filing as Resident. The Michigan taxes are kind of hidden, but they do reduce the total tax paid to Missouri.
Thanks again. Unfortunately, when I go to General info, It goes right to "last Years Filling info" and skips that first prompt for changing residency status. And if I start MO from scratch that option isn't presented.
