To enter Home Energy Credits -
Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
Click on Deductions and Credit
Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
Under Your Home
On Home Energy Credits, click the start or update button
Or enter home energy improvement in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to home energy improvement
DoninGA answered your question in terms of the Federal tax credit. However, since you posted this question in the State Tax Filing forum, I have to wonder if you actually had a specific state in mind. If you did, then please reply with the state in question and any other information.

Thank you. Can i take the credit all at once (i have a very high tax liability this year) or do I have to split it up over a number of years and carry it over?
Yes, you can take the solar energy credit on your federal tax return all at once. You would carry over the credit to future years only if your tax liability in the current year is less than the amount of your credit.
