Daughter works in MO (at school) we live in IL, do we file in both states?

We live in IL my daughter goes to school at University of Missouri and has a job there. She made around $6500 in Mizzou. When I enter the W-2 in TurboTax it shows the IL state tax owing $322. Is that right? Do we need to file both MO and IL state taxes? If so, does her earnings in MO only go on the MO tax and if so how do I do that?

Yes, you will file in both states because going to school is considered a “temporary absence” from your state of residence so your daughter remains an Illinois resident.

File a nonresident return for Missouri and a resident return for Illinois.

Owning $322 to Illinois appears correct. IL has a flat tax rate of 4.95%, which comes to $322.

States normally give you a credit for tax paid to another state, but none of your daughter’s income was taxed by MO so there is no tax credit on the IL return. You would get a refund on any MO withholding.

OK, thanks for your help!

I worked on the MO 1040 with an MO NRI (the Missouri Non-Resident form) and I think it looks like she will owe $96.  It seems odd to me that she would have to pay tax to both states?

She will need to file for both states, but should get a credit from IL for taxes paid to MO.
